EVO 2010 Discussions

Dear co-moderators

I know that a wiki page is not the perfect way to discuss topic but I agree with Wlodek, that we should keep it simple and not introduce new tools at the moment. Communicating via email worked fine last time because we were only four moderators but it still meant remembering to send a copy of the message to everyone…

So, let's use this space for our discussions. If this page gets too long or messy, we can create a new page for a certain topic and link to it from here and the sidebar. I will change the settings so that for now the wiki will not be public any more and will add you all as writers.

Remember to write your name at the beginning or end of your comments and replies.

Depending on your settings, you will receive notifications via email when someone has written something new here.

What has come up so far in our email exchanges:

3. Find a time where we can all meet synchronously. Can maybe everyone write here what in general is a good time for them to meet or if it is easier which days are completely out of question.

4. Work on the content: Last year, each moderator was responsible for a certain week but the others helped and added suggestions and resources. --> I think before we can start with this, we need to have decided the "theme" or focus of each week. I don't think we need to start from scratch but can work with what we already have from last year. We have to decide whether we will address complete newbies like last year or those with some SL experience. However, hat ever we do, we can be sure to get participants from both of those groups.

I have put last year's weekly outlines into the folder "EVO VWLL 2009" and created 6 new pages for this year. [Nergiz]

5. Here is the link to our Google Doc with all our suggestions

Thank you Nergiz for organizing this space!

>Think of a new name

Hmmm. Just about the only alternative I can see is VWs, i.e. something similar to last year's VWLL. This carries the empty promise that we'll actually cover a few of them :-( So, if we decide to adopt something like this, we should post a very clear proviso up front that we're not going to do all/most/many VWs, but just one, as an example :-)

>which days are completely out of question

Thursdays and Fridays, for me. But any time is negotiable really, for a worthy cause :-)

>Last year, each moderator was responsible...

As a mod noob this year, may I ask some old hands to give me (us?) a short rundown of how you did it last time? This would certainly help put things in perspective.

>decide whether we will address complete newbies like last year or those with some SL experience

A crash course for complete noobs? Is that an option?

>What else?

I guess there're potentially many ways labour can be divided... For example, according to our personal areas of SL expertise (e.g. scripting, building, quizzes, holodecks), or social skills (e.g. with noobs), or pedagogical/didactic preferences (e.g. dogme vs anti-dogme), or accessibility in the 6 weeks of the session, or many others... We must talk about these issues, I believe. Shall we produce a list of such and then meet in-world for a chat?

Thanks Wlodek! Feel free to edit the page above.

"How we did it last time" -> Same as this time :) I know, not very helpful. Well, we had a couple of meetings in-world, divided up the weeks that everyone was responsible for and then commented on those weeks and helped each other. Whoever had time, filled out the EVO Mods wiki page and whatever had to be done in Yahoo. Does this help?

Personally, I think even if we say that participants need experience in SL, we will get newbies. So, we better be prepared for it. A crash course might work + in the weekly outline, we can list which SL skills participants will need to have in order to participate in that particular activity and link them to video tutorials. When we send out the weekly messages to the participants in Ning, we can once again remind them of these.

Last year, we also offered regular office hours at different times, at least in the first week. Those who need extra help, can come to these and ask for help.

How about we make a crash course in SL part of week one this year? We can run it a couple of times depending on time zones. We can also ask for volunteers for a couple of moderators (or participants?) to run a similar session with late-comers if they need it

Wlodek, as an EVO old-timer, I'd be happy to meet sometime and have a chat about how the session worked last year if you like

I could help with late-comers and those who need extra help during regular office hours at different times. According to my personal area of one-year SL expertise, I could also give hand with building and holodecks.

I could also help with noobs during any week. I know about different orientation places in different languages... and a couple in English. We could also organise a welcoming activity in which participants would do activities to learn and use SL skills. I can also help with late-comers.
Time for meeting in GMT...I have to check the world clock. So far I can give you days: Monday-Tue-Thu, and Sat/Sun

I've thoroughly scanned my inventory for educational LMs and have come up with a longlist of places to visit in week 2 of TLVW10, for which I'm responsible. This is, of course, a very personal selection ... I've selected places which:
- are not too large
- have low lag
- are well-organized spacially
- are not glass-n-concrete sims
- offer educational resources
- are built around arts/humanities themes
- are not specifically about languages

Before I do more research in preparation of week 2 resources/programme, I'd like to pick your brains on your opinions of the places below. This is a longlist, so much depends on your feedback as far as cutting it down to manageable proportions is concerned... Your own favs, completely outside this list are also welcome, of course.
