Week 5 - Do It Yourself. Workshops (Will be updated)
Week 5: Feb 8 - 14
Overview
Participation in teaching - participants will be encouraged to put their knowledge into practice and arrange to teach each other in 15 minute slots
Learning outcomes
By the end of this week, you should:
- have joined a group in our Ning in a time slot that suits you best for a synchronous meeting.
- have participated in the AVALON business English teacihng session given by Graham Stanely, and reflected on his session in a blog post in our Ning group.
- have participated in one of the Spanish lessons by Dafne González, and reflected on her session(s) in a blog post in our Ning group.
- have prepared and taught a mini language lesson for your peers, received and given feedback on these lessons.
- have posted snapshots of your mini lesson to flickr.
- have reflected on your teaching in your blog.
SL skills required (NEED TO BE CHECKED)
- Virtual class management (i.e. giving instructions, setting groups, monitoring, giving feedback, etc.)
- Second Life skills previously learned.
- Second Life teaching tools/resources.
Activities
- Join the Ning group for the time slot that suits you best.
- Participate in the AVALON business English teacihng session given by Graham Stanely. (Details of place and time to be posted later).
- Participate in one of the Spanish lessons by Dafne González in LanguageLab. (Details of place and time will be posted later).
- Prepare a mini language lesson (max 15 min). Think about what you learned about different methods, places and tools and how they were used by other teachers to help plan your session. Think about the rationale of choosing particular activities, tools, etc. in SL and the pedagogical, language aims of your lesson.
- Meet with the participants in your group in-world and teach each other and give each other feedback.
- Don't forget to take pictures during these sessions (you will be busy teaching so ask someone else from the group to take pictures of your session and help other's when it is their turn). Upload the pictures to flickr, tag them with "TLVW10" and add them to our group pool.
- Reflect on your teaching in your personal blog in Ning or elsewhere (provide a link if you write on a different blog and tag it with tlvw10). You can embed pictures of your session in this blog post.
- Participate in the discussion about Virtual Worlds vs Other Methods of E-Learning and the discussion about Real Life vs Second Life language learning and teaching.

Absolutely, Maria, any resource on basic scripting and techer skills belongs here.
You may like to see links to more basic skills placed in previous weeks, and coordinate.
We must be careful not to overload the participants with links, or they'll get discouraged...

Excellent videos for the optional readings/viewings!

Wlo, according to the links (videos) I have suggested for the optional readings, they are mostly different communication tools to be used when delivering information to a group (notecards, notecard readers, multimedia boards, giving ncs, etc). I am afraid I didn´t see them in previous weeks as you said. If I am wrong, let me know. In my opinion, it is useful giving extra information about these sl tools .

I would like a hand for the SL skills required. I have been thinking about, and these are my ideas.
- Brainstorm ideas for implementation
- Preprare and design the virtual setting
- Advanced Second Life communication skills (TEXT AND AUDIO)
- Develop toolkit containing both instructional material and tool(s) to be used

>Advanced Second Life communication skills (TEXT AND AUDIO)
I think I added these under week 4, but feel free to move.
I believe we should all have some synchronous discussion on this issue (and others :-)

Maybe we should all brainstorm the difference between the two categories: resources versus optional readings/viewings?
As it is, I can hardly see any underlying principle...
Would the former be those which are actually needed for the given week's completion?
How do we stop the latter form becoming a catch-all trash-bag?
Questions...

I made a few surface alterations, I think the only substantial one was to change Teaching Practice, which has come to have a slightly old-fashioned ring, hasn't it - to Participation in teaching. Is that acceptable, or silly? this is a team effort, so please, anyone, change it back to TP if you feel that is better.
I also , at places 2 and 3 put adraft of the references to Graham's offer to have participants in Business English lesson, and Dafne's offers for participation in Spanish. Are these lessons OK in a list, or should the be in a section of their own?.

>Participation in teaching -- fine with me... either way :-)
>Are these lessons OK in a list -- ditto... But... will the trainees manage so many tasks in one week, I wonder?

I've just remembered Nik Peachey's videos in EduNation, in the black booths on the edge of the sandbox. I'll check on the subjects, but they should feature here somewhere.
ALSO, there used to be a very good explanati0n of the sound controls and setting in one of the lecture hall, also on the edge of the sandbox in EduNation. I will check those, too. Of course, ISTE has good. Suff I must check in the requisite week to see if there are referred to here.

I could locate Gavin's guide to sound. Perhaps he has removed it.
Shall I look for the ISTE reference, or don't we need it?

We need all we can have.
It's up to us to decide later how much of this we want to give to trainees.

@Wlo, I posted ideas for the SL skills in week 5, probably I am confused with activities and skills. The thing is that I am not quite sure how to write SL SKILLS for this week. :-0
@Dennis, I added 2 aspects in the Learning outcome part (Daf and Graham).
Maria Pinto said

Would it be too much to ask participants to reflect on the sessions (Daf´s and Graham´s? Or should I forget about that?
Dennis Newson said

Mary Maria, What do you mean exactly? Do you want us or future participants to reflect on Daf and Graham's sessions? If you mean the future participants, of course they should reflect, say .

Here is an image of Nik's booths in EduNation. I wanated to put the photos with the SLURL and other info above, but PBwiki does not to want me to do that.

Sorry. The image of Nik's booths is uploaded, but I could not put it where I wanted.
Włodzimierz Sobkowiak said

Dennis, I'm not sure WHERE you wanted the picture, but I wanted to help, so I:
- [moved] your snapshots to the evo2010 folder
- [edited] week 5
- [opened] the file menu on the right
- dragged your snapshot onto the edit area
BTW: it is a bit too large, I think, to fit nicely.
I usually shrink my snapshots before upload to ning and other such places, because the original resolution I have in the SL viewer is like 1200x760, which is too much for easily accomodating on a website (unless it is clever enough to adjust the size automatically, as e.g. Flickr is). Ask me if you need help on this front, OK?

@Dennis and All
After meeting this morning, Nahiram and I got together and discussed about SL skills required. Please, try to read it and give your suggestions. We also added a link from SLexperiments, a lesson template for participants.
